Shipping large industrial equipment can be a complex task. There are a lot of steps to plan and coordinate in order to ensure that the equipment gets delivered on time, without damage. We’ve been shipping equipment for a decade, so we’ve learned a thing or two about logistics. Today, we ship to every U.S. state and several international locations, including Canada, Mexico, China, Colombia, and Peru.
In today’s post, we’re sharing insight from Karen Whitener, LEL’s Logistics Director, into our process for shipping as well as a few tips you can apply to your own logistics projects.
It all starts with the truck. Karen determines what type of truck(s) will be needed based on the weight and dimensions of the equipment to be shipped. Then she decides whether a forklift can be used for loading or if a crane is needed. Tarps are often used to cover the equipment, so she notes if they’ll be necessary for the shipment as well.
Once she has a list of all the equipment needed to move the machinery, Karen begins coordinating the schedules of the equipment operators and the loading team. Karen says, “It’s a juggling act because you have to make sure every piece of equipment and everyone who will be needed for each step of the process is where they need to be when they need to be there. We don’t want things getting held up and people waiting on something else to happen before they can do their part.”
In addition to the trucks and logistics equipment, Karen also has to arrange for special permits, routing surveys, and escort vehicles for loads that are over dimensional or overweight.
While Karen could offer a multitude of advice about shipping, she says that two things are the most important: safety and scheduling.
The logistics team is committed to safety, and it’s their mission to make sure everyone goes home uninjured. The team requires that everyone wear safety equipment, and each job is videoed and photographed to make sure that drivers are properly securing the equipment for a safe load.
Scheduling can make or break a shipping project. For each project, Karen creates a list of equipment, tools, and personnel needed, and she creates a timeline of when and where each item and individual will come into play. Planning out the entire process from start to finish ensures that the project doesn’t run over budget or deliver late due to scheduling conflicts.
